Looe Old Guildhall Museum and Gaol
shipbuilding
Looe’s main contribution to the war effort lay in its ship building work for the Admiralty. Frank Curtis Ltd produced over sixty Motor Torpedo boats together with numerous Harbour Service boats and minesweepers in its yard on the West Looe river. After construction the boats were floated down below the bridge for fitting out. A large workforce was needed for this enterprise. They were billeted in the old town in East Looe, an area which had been condemned and was to be demolished. The houses remain to this day.
