Looe Old Guildhall Museum and Gaol
Looe Defences
Defences were built in many parts of Looe:
Two 4.7” naval guns and a searchlight were positioned at Hannafore, West Looe.
Five 3-pounder guns were positioned at Pennylands, West Looe near the turreted area; another was on the Banjo pier and another at the eastern end of East Looe beach.
A radar battery was installed on the Wooldown, East Looe, the base of which is used today as a viewing point for visitors.
Tank traps were set up at Bridgend and on the seafront.
The beaches were barb-wired and placed out of bounds.
A shooting range was established from Middle Beach to the eastern end of Plaidy Beach.
Activity
Print out the map and try to draw Looe’s defences in the correct position. Use symbols to represent them and include a key. If you are interested to know what they would have looked like, you can find pictures on Google images.
