The Bombing of Shutta
On the 8th April, 1941 enemy aircraft, dropped about 100 incendiary bombs over Shutta. There were no casualties but one of the bombs went through the roof of The Globe Inn. Rumour has it that the landlady was so incensed that she wrote to Hitler claiming damages for the loss of her expensive fur coat!
Local schoolboys rushed to the site and began collecting empty casings. Later, some of these had to be collected by policemen as they were still live!
Activity
Imagine that you are the landlady of The Globe Inn at the time of the Shutta bombing. Write a letter to Adolf Hitler complaining about the damage to your business and the loss of your fur coat. Remember to ask for compensation! You could also mention the danger that the live shells presented to the local boys. Try to include lots of description about the damage caused and how you are feeling.
